"Spy to the sky. Let it compound."
the shape of compound growth
What's in a name
The shape of compounding: each turn builds on the one before it, and the curve gets steeper as it goes. We liked it twice over — this project is built on compound growth through simple, honest rules… and everything it trades is the S&P 500: SPY, SSO, SPXL, SH. S-P. Spira.
What this is
Spira is a private, educational dashboard. Every few minutes while the market is open, a rules-based model reads the price of SPY, names the market's mood — its regime — and publishes what it would hold and, more importantly, why, in plain English. The signal is committed once a day at the market close; intraday reads are provisional.
It was built to teach: how markets move, how a systematic strategy thinks, and how software is engineered — the same rules shown here are a real Python strategy library with a 30-year backtest behind it. Start with how the strategy works, watch it live on Today, and browse every past day in the History archive.
All signals are computed from public market data (daily prices from public sources, volatility indices from CBOE). Nothing here connects to a brokerage account.
The 30-year backtest
Before a single dollar follows these rules, they are replayed against three decades of market history — the dot-com crash, 2008, 2020, 2022 and everything between. This is the current rule set, walked forward day by day with no peeking ahead:
Growth of $1 · log scale
Year-by-year returns

Spira is educational and hypothetical. It is not investment advice, not a recommendation to buy or sell any security, and it makes no promise of results. Leveraged ETFs like SPXL and SSO can lose value very quickly. The performance line is a hypothetical model track record, not a real account. Never invest money you can't afford to lose — and always do your own thinking. That's rather the point.
